2001 Vw Jetta 1.9 Tdi Cranks Won’t Start Smokes White | TDIClub Forums We got this 2001 vw jetta tdi, non running due to the timing belt breaking on the previous owner. unfortunately, the head was damaged due to piston and valve contact from when the timing belt broke. on the bright side, we were able to source a doner car, that we pulled a replacement block head from. I've posted a video of trying to start it and photos of the two rails of relays under the drivers side dash. the bottom group has a 109 in it, but there's no wiring harness that looks to attach to it. perhaps someone can tell me if i'm missing a relay. My 2002 jetta (165k miles) cranks but will not start. it cranks somewhat slowly, around 125 rpms but i'm not sure if this is slow enough to indicate a problem. i've tried going through several guides but i'm struggling on how to narrow it down from all of the possible issues. But this is the first time it cranks but won't start. it might be worth seeing if you have the 109 relay on your car, usually in the fuse box under the dash. here's a pic of mine on my tdi and you can see it has 109 printed on it. they can fail or play up and cause starting problems.
