Most of the advanced reactors under development in the u.s. require haleu fuel to achieve smaller designs, longer operating cycles, and increased efficiencies compared with current technologies. however, haleu is not currently available from domestic suppliers. Two reactor designs, one fueled with heu and the other with haleu, were prepared based on a multi stage design process. the neutronics and thermal hydraulics characteristics of these reactors are compared and contrasted to illustrate the impacts of fuel enrichment. For states producing haleu, or holding stocks of haleu, the iaea will need to take into account that the quantities of possible diversion significance are much smaller compared with leu (or looked at another way, the potential breakout time will be much shorter).
