Here we present our technical report summarizing the approach used to undertake this analysis, which relies on navius’ in house energy economy and electricity models. In our first in a series of planned updates, we describe our modelling approach, review canada’s anticipated emissions trajectory toward net zero emissions based on modelling current climate policy, and introduce our five net zero energy system pathways.

Analyzing Net Zero Pathways For Canada - Navius Research Inc Stakeholders will be able to access raw modelling results for download. this will address a key need in the analysis necessary for canada to further understand different net zero pathways. Our consultants specialize in analysing government and corporate policies designed to meet environmental goals, with a focus on energy and greenhouse gas emission policy. In this paper, we describe our modelling approach, review canada’s anticipated emissions trajectory toward net zero emissions based on modelling current climate policy, and introduce our five net zero energy system pathways. Navius research used our in house model, gtech iesd, to simulate a set of scenarios with and without carbon pricing in order to evaluate the impact of these systems on emissions and forecast the supply and demand balance of tradeable compliance credits between 2020 and 2035.

Our goal is to model the broader energy system implications of a net zero transformation across sectors, geographies, and technologies, and also examine the types of policies and infrastructure required to achieve these outcomes. Under net zero, utility electricity demand increases by 57 131% relative to current levels. this analysis finds that the most cost effective way to meet this demand is by higher capacity utilization of existing hydro assets coupled with deployment of wind, solar and batteries. But are those policies actually reducing the emissions causing climate change? we worked with navius research to model the effectiveness of canadian climate policy to date, and their projected impacts on emissions out to 2030. Navius told us that the impacts of the two alternate pathways to net zero emissions in 2050 could be measured. we agreed that understanding these differences would better inform policymakers and public discourse.
