Black History Nyc Harlem Us Adult Literacy For over 100 years, harlem has been a mecca for black culture in the united states. this began with the harlem renaissance in the early 1920’s. the harlem renaissance was incredibly important in american history because of the explosion of art, music, and culture created by african americans. This paper examines an “experimental” program in african american adult education that took place at the harlem branch of the new york public library in the early 1930s.

Nyc Black History About Published when she was already shaping the movement as literary editor of the crisis, fauset’s novel follows three black children in 1920s new york as they navigate both the color line and the class divide as they pursue their dreams and try to keep their friendships intact. at the time of its publication, the book was considered a landmark. Black adults, three fourths of whom had a grade school education or less in 1934, were not a specific concern of the growing adult education movement until the depression when harlem was chosen as the northern site for a national experiment. In 1954, the new york city board of education (boe) closed wadleigh high school due to its deteriorated physical condition, declining enrollment, and poor academic performance. but the route to closure spanned decades. Digital harlem forms one part of a collaborative research project on everyday life in harlem between 1915 and 1930. african american expressions of writing, music, and art during the 1920s and 1930s are well represented in the vast collections of the library of congress.
