Dahlias : R/gardening The op dvd player only supports xvid avi at 720x480/576 so his obvious choice is to encode mkv or mp4 which use h.264 to xvid avi. i think,therefore i am a hamster. Well i installed that xvid codec and it does show up in virtualdub. trying it now, it seems to work but is very slow. in any case, i would really like to be able to use ffdshow as i had access to other codecs and was familiar with it. i don't need instructions on how to use it within virtualdub, it doesn't show up in virtualdub!.

Dahlias! : R/gardening Yeah i realize that. it's been years since i've even thought about installing video codecs. i had just assumed that there would be some codecs on my computer, but it looks like with modern media players you don't have to install individual codecs like you did years ago. i just installed xvid again from another source and the older avi worked with the script. for the h264 codec i installed it. Xvid and divx are two implementations of the mpeg 4 part 2 (asp) specification. as has been noted, divx is a commercial product, xvid is a "free" open source product. 2 pass encoding doesn't guaranty quality. it only guaranties you get the best quality for the selected bitrate (and all the other settings). using single pass target quantizer encoding guaranties quality. with a quantizer of 2 you will get frames that are nearly identical to the source. at 3 there will be a little macroblocking but it won't really be noticeable at normal playback speeds. in.
