The Black Cauldron 1985 Freemixjam The black caulrdon bombed in the box office, and critics of the time could not help but compare it unfavorably to secret of nimh, released not long before, the masterpiece of don bluth, who departed from disney in a fit of pique, taking a dozen talented animators with him. "the black cauldron" is not a typical disney animated feature. for one thing, it's not a g rated musical. in fact, it was the first ever disney feature to receive a pg rating. the story comes from the works of lloyd alexander, in the spirit of j.r.r. tolkien. According to legend, in the mystical land of prydain, the spirit of an evil king was captured in a giant black cauldron. the cauldron became powerful enough to resurrect an army of the dead, so the cauldron was hidden from those who would use its power for evil. though many have searched for it, none have found it. The black cauldron review. the black cauldron is a 1985 animated fantasy film which is the 25th film from walt disney animation studios. it is their most underrated film which is quite solid and very authentic.

Overall, i find "the black cauldron" to be a fun, dark ride, one that’s ambitious, has decent morals, and is technically brilliant. both the horned king and princess eilonwy likewise have secure spots among my personal favorite disney characters. With a budget that exploded to $44 million dollars, the black cauldron became the most expensive animated film ever made at the time, but with a story based on a beloved children’s classic, in the tried and true fantasy genre for disney, how could this film have failed so abysmally?. The fact of the matter is, that for a film that has at best a cult following and virtually no reputation good or ill outside of hardcore animation and fantasy film buffs, the black cauldron was born from the most convoluted, unspeakably painful history of any one of disney's 49 canonical features.
