(Art Tutorial) Acrylic / Gouache Painting – Portrait – ARTALEX Most gouache artists, including james gurney, work from fresh paint. he squeezes it onto a folded wet paper towel and keeps spraying with water while he’s working. but he says he only works with wet paint, never dried. i have some gouache in a travel palette and spray it with water to reconstitute before i use it, but the character is definitely different once it has dried. we had a demo for. I have acryla gouache (holbein) which is basically a matte acrylic, and some traditional gouache, and i was wondering if it was archival or stable to use the acryla gouache as an underpainting, wait for it to fully dry, and then paint traditional gouache on top? would it be safer to gesso the acrylic underpainting area first?.

Paint A Gouache Portrait WITH ME! - My Painting Process | Art Journal ... If you rapidly rewet dried gouache paint (like you would do with watercolors), you get a thin, poor, chalky paint, which is quite different from fresh paint – probably because some components (like fillers and opacizers) rewet faster than others. but if you patiently add water a bit at a time, mixing with a palette knife, you get something very close to the original consistency. assuming. You can use gouache as an “underpainting”, covering completely with pastel – then it can be used thickly or thinly, on wallis best used thinly or it will fill the tooth, but even if used thickly on, say, hot pressed watercolour, you can still put some pastel over the top, and to add more layers, you can”fix” in between. He did some further testing with gouache mixed with acrylic mediums and found the results disappointing. a lot will depend upon how much conventional gouache paint is mixed with what proportion of acrylic medium. but the more acrylic medium you mix into the paint, the less you can expect the easy handling qualities of true gouache. The cracking of gouache, unfortunately, resulted in many pieces of loose pigment that can be easily dislodged from the pans… which complicates my life a bit as it supposed to be a mobile setup. also, while i found the gouache to be easily rewettable, i am still experiencing probblem preparing large enough mixes. Gouache is my goto substitute because it dries quickly, but i want the paint to stay alive on the paper to allow for wet blending. i came across an article somewhere, we someone mentioned keeping watercolor wet longer with glycerine. i believe their recommendation was to add a few drops to the water. I love gouache, and also am trying my best to make art in medieval style, illumination, etc. even this early in my journey, i would be horrified to be called a “tube painter”.
