There are lots of ways to use a reference! for example, i may need to draw moose horns but forget exactly what they look like, so looking at a picture can help me draw my own version. and sometimes i need help with perspective. For me, i want to be a portrait artist, and i always use a reference. i personally don‘t have much interest in drawing from imagination, at least not at this stage in my journey. You have to build your eye as well as your technique. keep comparing relative sizes and angles in your reference (i.e. the size of her arms and hands versus her body) and adjusting. over time, it will improve it's not something that comes quickly.

Check this video from proko, hopefully it helps. i'd say you might want to experiment with the features detail structure you like from the reference and apply it onto what you have in your imagination mind. I’ve studied the skeleton, muscle tissue, animal bodies, etc to find out how they work and how they’re composed, and it has dramatically helped my art. there are a lot of things i am confident i can draw without a reference because i’ve studied these things. Almost all artists, including the old masters, use references. being able to draw from one's imagination is not something every artist can do though with repetition, lots of repetition, muscle memory will make you much better at it.
