DRMM Architects London: De Rijke Marsh Morgan - E-architect Maggie’s oldham is a carefully made manifesto for the architecture of health, realised in wood. the building appears to float above the existing wall. a hopeful view of the horizon towards the pennines. maggie’s centres seek to provide what the late charles jencks described as ‘architecture of hope’. Maggie's, oldham was built in 2017. it's the world's first engineered hardwood building. it is clad in tulipwood, and has an interior that is just as innovative and beautiful. designed by alex de rijke of drmm, the centre is a one storey building supported over its garden by steel legs.

Maggie’s oldham is the first permanent building constructed from sustainable tulipwood cross laminated timber, following on from drmm, ahec and arup’s development of this material. all of the walls and roof are visibly structure and form an exquisite natural timber finish internally. For maggie’s oldham, drmm re present this new material in an integrated design for a public building, carrying a message for cancer care and for environmentally sophisticated architecture.

For maggie’s oldham, drmm re present this new material in an integrated design for a public building, carrying a message for cancer care and for environmentally sophisticated architecture. Maggie’s center is to be “a house full of surprises,” the architects of the commissioned drmm firm, explained while throwing some light onto the details of the subject. the building is supported on slender columns which provide an elegantly sophisticated aura to the place. Maggie’s oldham is the latest in a string of centres by high profile and interesting architects at hospitals across the uk and beyond. london based drmm join frank gehry, the late zaha hadid, rem koolhaas, snøhetta, amanda levete and herzog & de meuron, among others. The world's first building made from hardwood cross laminated tulipwood in oldham. Built in the grounds of the royal oldham hospital, maggie’s oldham lifts the spirits and inspires people to cope with cancer and its treatments. raised on six slender columns, the building floats over a new garden of pine, birch and tulip trees. a ‘tree of life’ grows through the building.
