Migrate From Disqus To GitHub Discussions (giscus) | Elio Struyf Migrate from disqus to github discussions this is a script to migrate from disqus to github discussions which allows you to make use of giscus or any other custom integration you might want to use. I describe the basic process i took to download and clean the xml data that came from disqus, and how i converted it to a format compatible with github discussions.

Migrate From Disqus To GitHub Discussions (giscus) | Elio Struyf There are a number of cloud and self hosted disqus alternatives, but i wanted something open source, simple, no frills, and low maintenance. for this static site hosted on github pages, it seemed silly to self host a comment platform like isso or commento just for the <100 comments i have. The bad news is there’s no official way to migrate/import comments from disqus to giscus (giscus/giscus#330). and clearly this was the most difficult part of this comment system chance task. Since migrating my own blog comments from disqus to giscus six months ago, i‘ve seen a noticeable uptick in substantive conversations. with the friction of signing up for a proprietary service removed, more readers are chiming in with questions, clarifications, and relevant links. But now there are several alternatives, and i’ve opted for giscus which is very lightweight, is built on github discussions, and is open source with no tracking or advertising.

But giscus, using github discussions, is something i want to use and i’ve now implemented it on the site. this isn’t a blog post on how to implement giscus as it’s incredibly simple. just head over to the giscus site, go to the configuration section and follow the instructions. Setting up giscus was a simple case of following the instructions from the home page, but i go through all of the steps here for completeness. the first decision to make is which github repository is going to host your discussions. Your first post about the switch coincided with a friend mentioning a new comment platform, i was using a homegrown version using the github issue api (which does not support discussions) so this is much better.
