The importance of those interactions can be measured in terms of plant derived carbon accumulation as a central component of soil development through litter deposition, root growth, and rhizodeposition of organic compounds. The objective of this study is to present a modeling approach capable of simulating non isothermal multiphase and multicomponent reactive transport processes in porous media and to explicitly demonstrate the effects of soil/atmosphere interactions on such reactive transport processes. This collection invites submissions on the topic of unravelling the complexities of chemical mechanisms by which plants, microbes in soil, and the surrounding air interact and impact one. Using earth system model experiments, we show widespread carbon water trade offs between net ecosystem production and precipitation minus evapotranspiration driven by soil moisture dynamics.
