The study included five precipitation pattern treatments: a control group (c), as well as groups receiving 50 and 100% of the local mean annual precipitation amount (145 mm) during either the early growing season (e50 and e100) or the late growing season (l50 and l100). Three precipitation variables indicated as important by our model were associated with precipitation timing, as opposed to amount. two were the length of dry periods between precipita tion events. We evaluated the effect of soil sample timing (preplant and v5 corn development stage [v5]), n fertilization (0 and 180 kg ha−1) and incubation length (7, 14, and 28 d) on pmnan (0–30 cm) across a range of soil properties and weather conditions. However, the effects of changes in both annual precipitation amount and its seasonal distribution on the soil seed bank are poorly understood, limiting the accurate prediction of how soil seed bank regulates the regeneration of plant species and the replenishment of vegetation.
