We start by defining critical reflection, its importance, and its influences in hci. we argue that ongoing reflection by both users and designers is a crucial element of a socially responsible technology design practice. we demonstrate how reflective design can work through two case studies.

Reflective Design – Medium Reflective design is the highest level of norman, ortony, and revelle's three level model of emotion and design. at this level, we use information from both visceral and behavioral processing (i.e. the other layers) in combination with our knowledge and experiences. Reflective design, often found in systems such as reflective middleware or reflective programming languages, allows the system to observe and modify its own structure and behavior at runtime. Building on a growing body of work in critical computing, reflective design combines analysis of the ways in which technologies reflect and perpetuate unconscious cultural assumptions, with design, building, and evaluation of new computing devices that reflect alternative possibilities. Based on donald schön's ideas, the reflective model approaches design as an intuitive, dynamic, and iterative process, emphasizing ‘reflection in action’. the reflective model supports innovation by providing value especially when information and objectives are unclear or conflicting.

The reflective design project is based on examining the interrelationship between people and technology. it uses cultural analysis as a starting point for technology design. At its core, reflection design involves systematic examination of design decisions, their contextual influences, and their impacts on users and society, leading to more informed and responsible design outcomes. Reflective design is the practice of creating objects, spaces, and systems that encourage us to pause and consider our choices, values, and their impact on the world. Reflection enhances creativity by sparking new ideas and approaches, builds confidence by showcasing progress, and fuels motivation to tackle new challenges. for anyone starting out in ux.
