Rubus Spectabilis “Olympic Double” – Salmonberry – Off The Edge Gardening This flowering bramble, rubus spectabilis “olympic double” or the salmonberry, was found in both. it is a north american cousin of our favourite roadside berry provider and erstwhile adversary. 'olympic double' is a thicket forming shrub with upright prickly shoots and palmate leaves to 15cm long, composed of ovate, glossy, mid green leaflets. very showy, double bright purple pink flowers 5cm across open in mid spring.

Olympic double salmonberry is a dense multi stemmed deciduous shrub with an upright spreading habit of growth. its relatively coarse texture can be used to stand it apart from other landscape plants with finer foliage. Appearing before the leaves and throughout early spring, the two inch unique double flowers (with 30 petals!) are a stunning pink red! this arching 6 8' shrub then produces large, orange, raspberry like fruits which can be eaten fresh or made into pies or preserves. Native to the west coast of north america from southern alaska south to california, rubus spectabilis 'olympic double' has spectacular fully double, magenta rose coloured flowers in late spring. these flowers contrast well with the bright green foliage. Double flowers are bright magenta and although individuals are a little messy in form, the overall effect is attractive. stems are dull sandy brown and prickly. older stems have peeling bark. best grown in full sun on well drained soil.
