Sustainable Green Cities European Platform Urban Greening Launched in december 2022 as part of the urban agenda for the eu, the greening cities partnership brings together 31 members, including 10 cities, 2 regions, and 3 national authorities, to address the pressing challenges of urban green infrastructure. With the social and economic benefits of creating sustainable green cities in mind, five key areas of focus were identified this year that will help us continue to build on the momentum of the european platform for urban greening for the future. The european platform for urban greening is the first platform of its kind in europe and it is fast becoming a world class reference point for all aspects of urban greening. funded by the european commission, the platform aims to increase the knowledge and skills. Under the topic ‘greening cities’, projects will be funded to experiment and deliver tangible innovative solutions on green infrastructure across european cities, for better addressing the biodiversity, pollution, resource and climate challenges, including synergy development with other key policy areas.

To help reverse biodiversity loss within and around urban areas, the eu has called on european cities of more than 20,000 inhabitants to develop ambitious urban greening plans (ugps) aligned with its biodiversity strategy for 2030. This position paper has been prepared by the urban agenda partnership on greening cities, a coalition of european cities, member states, and eu institutions working together to strengthen the role of green infrastructure (gi) in urban environments. Greenclimeadapt aimed to demonstrate how cities can address and adapt to the impacts of climate change (including increased rainfall and urban heat island) via green tools including open storm water management, the use of green facades and green roofs. Integrating es into city planning can lead to greening strategies that support both communities and ecosystems. the eu funded commit2green (c2g) project will assess the supply of es in eight cities, focusing on flood and heat risk reduction, as well as recreational opportunities.
