Understanding Chinese Second Language Learners Foreign Language ... The present study examined foreign language enjoyment of csl learners studying in china with the aim of finding the distinctive features of their language learning enjoyment and its main components. By the end of 2021, the number of people outside china learning chinese as a second/foreign language (csl/cfl) had exceeded 25 million, with over 200 million individuals learning and using the language (ministry of education, 2023). The past decades have witnessed a significant increase in the number of global chinese as a second language (l2) learners. accompanying the surge is the growing body of research on their motivational factors. We address these questions by reviewing a classroom study on learning chinese as a second language (l2) (chen et al., in press). This literature review explores the evolving landscape of l2 motivation, emphasizing the interplay between motivation and identity among chinese students studying a second language. Using data from 58,240 chinese as a second language (csl) learners with diverse l1 backgrounds and proficiency levels, the study employs the world atlas of language structures (wals) index to measure linguistic distance. The changes in csl learners’ factors, and the burgeoning demand for understanding our students and their linguistic and cognitive needs call for more empirical studies on a wide range of topics to scrutinize the nature of chinese language learning and factors that affect learning. The traditional method of presenting chinese characters to chinese as a foreign language (cfl) learners is essentially textual and flattened (chung, 2003). three values of a character, its meaning, writing and pronunciation, are simultaneously presented in the text form.
