Food systems are increasingly exposed to drivers of change, ranging from sudden shocks to long term stressors, such as natural disasters, pest outbreaks, economic and political crises, climate change, resource degradation, etc. Changes in the world food system are urgently required, in order to improve its outcomes for food and nutrition security, the environment, and society. we address this challenge by developing and applying approaches to model, assess and improve the performance, sustainability and resilience of food value chains. While there is broad scientific consensus on the benefits of more plant based diets and agricultural production, transitioning complex agri food value chains and demand remains difficult due to persistent economic, social, and political barriers. Food production, processing and consumption are interconnected all over the world, forming a highly complex “food system”. this system should provide sufficient food to a growing global population, no matter how much the climate changes, or how scarce resources become.
