Making America White Again The Washington Post Addressing racial equity is a top priority for the biden administration, including advancing a comprehensive equity agenda to deliver criminal justice reform. Black americans are far more likely than whites to say the nation’s criminal justice system is racially biased and that its treatment of minorities is a serious national problem. In short, as american history shows clearly, no justice system we have ever had has been just because it has, from this nation’s origins, always been racially defined as well as determined. I describe how cultural and structural racism operate the entire contemporary american criminal justice system via five features: devaluation of certain human lives, ubiquitous adaptation, networked structure, perceived neutrality, and temporal amnesia. Racial minorities’ perceptions of unfairness in the criminal justice system have dampened cooperation with police work and impeded criminal trials. in 2013, over two thirds of african americans saw the criminal justice system as biased against blacks, in contrast to one quarter of whites. Relative to white offenders, those who are african american, latina o, and native american often receive harsher sentences, while those who are asian often receive similar or more lenient sentences. these findings, however, are not universal and tend to be context specific. We are asking the justice system to solve intractable racial justice problems that no other institution—not politics, not the media, and not academia—can resolve.
