Vw ran the 020 from i think 77 98 and all manual transmissions are interchangeable between mk1 and mk3 you just need the appropriate clutch components. for example if you want to hook in an asf transmission to an aba engine you need mk2 clutch components (the asf has a "longer" 5th gear for better highway mileage than the che/dfq which were mk3 020s) i lost the bookmarks to some websites.
