Welcome Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory Attend the annual wiikwemkoong cultural festival held every civic holiday weekend (first weekend in august), this festival is one of the largest and oldest pow wows in eastern canada. This year the cultural festival will take place from saturday, august 2 to monday, august 4, but in a switch up from previous years, the contest awards (this is a competition powwow) will take place on sunday—allowing for more dancers and drums to come from away. This event, begun in 1961, is the forerunner of all modern powwow festivals in central canada and thus it has special status. colonization had ended the tradition in the 1800s but the idea of traditional gatherings with dancing, drumming and singing never went away.
