Ottawa City Council Celebrates Black History Month Black Ottawa Scene Some 200 members from ottawa’s diverse communities were on hand as the city of ottawa celebrated the 2024 black history month in the council chambers of city hall. mayor mark sutcliffe led the celebrations by paying tribute to the contributions of people of african descent to the evolution of canada’s national capital and the country in. King credited the mayor and council for approving an anti racism strategy in 2022, which, over five years, aims to remove barriers to black ottawans in city services and policies. he also highlighted the oc transpo mural project, which will feature works from black history ottawa on three double decker buses.

On a crisp february evening, with a hall filled with anticipation and excitement, over 150 people—a diverse mix of federal, provincial, and municipal leaders, community advocates, and everyday heroes and sheroes—gathered to honour the rich legacy of black canadians. Each february, we gather to honour and celebrate the remarkable achievements of black communities, not just in our city, but across canada. this month gives us a precious opportunity to listen to their stories, learn from their experiences, and recognize their invaluable contributions to our society. On wednesday, february 12, city council will officially recognize black history month. the black national anthem, lift every voice and sing, will be performed by ottawa’s heavenly voice choir.

Ottawa Black History Month Launched At City Hall Black Ottawa Scene Each february, we gather to honour and celebrate the remarkable achievements of black communities, not just in our city, but across canada. this month gives us a precious opportunity to listen to their stories, learn from their experiences, and recognize their invaluable contributions to our society. On wednesday, february 12, city council will officially recognize black history month. the black national anthem, lift every voice and sing, will be performed by ottawa’s heavenly voice choir. It was my pleasure to declare on behalf of the city of ottawa and my council colleagues, that the month of february be officially declared black history month here in ottawa. it is so important to come together and celebrate our identities and what makes us a community. On feb. 13th, 2024, the arts and entertainment company in our tongues hosted the black history month jazz and poetry performances of yanaminah thullah, sarah kabamba, and antoine l. collins at the saw art gallery. Celebrate black history month with us, #ottcity! this year, ottawa’s black history month theme is “our canadian story: claiming our space,” which is a call to action for allies to help create safe spaces for black community members, while encouraging black residents to claim their space in our city. As the united nations declaration of international decade for people of african descent winds up (2015–2024), canadians from all works of life converged at the national gallery, ottawa, on saturday, 27, for the annual opening ceremony of black history month under the theme: black excellence: a heritage to celebrate; a future to build.
